He was in the U.S. Navy on the USS Essex and later he attended Nacogdoches Business College and worked for the Texas Highway Department in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was a machinist and was the third generation owner of Nicholson Outdoor Power Equipment in Paris.

Don enjoyed riding motorcycles, especially taking long riding trips, target shooting, wood working, and leather crafting. Two of his most memorable trips were a bear hunt with his son, Lance, in Canada in September of 1977 and a moose hunt with his son, Scott, in Alaska in September of 2010. He took his family on memorable vacations that were learning experiences for his children, teaching them the love of nature. Also, one of Don's best accomplishments in life was teaching his daughter, Marilyn, to be a strong, independent, and accomplished woman.

Don was preceded in death by his parents, an infant great-grandson, Stephen Taylor Nicholson, and a brother, Eddie Norman Nicholson, Sr.
