Your Funeral

Building | Roden-Pryor Funeral Directors | Paris Texas

The Scott Mansion was completed in 1910 by Rufus Fenner Scott, who originally brought J.L. Wees, the architect, to Paris from  St. Louis to design his home. Mrs. Margaret Scott made numerous trips to world capitols to purchase custom decorations and furnishings for the Dutch Renaissance/Art Nouveau structure. In the center of the house was a three-story atrium surrounded by a carved maple staircase and banisters and topped by a large stained glass skylight. Engineering features provided an elaborate underground drainage system that allows the basement to remain uniquely dry and a central steam heating system. In 1938 the house was purchased by Gene Roden, who supervised extensive renovations to accommodate its present function as a funeral home, while still maintaining the concept and quality of its original design. The home was listed in the National Register of Historic Places by the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1983, and became a named Texas Historic Landmark property with the Texas Historical Commission in 1984. Tours by appointment.
