Obituary for April Ann Coward (Hamilton)

April Ann Coward (Hamilton)
April Ann Hamilton Coward, age 71, born to Arthur Perry Hamilton and Mary Helen Whitlock, passed away on Tuesday, May 15, 2018 in the ICU at Truett Hospital on the campus of Baylor Scott And White University Medical Center in Dallas, Texas. Roden-Pryor Funeral Directors is in charge of her final wishes.

April was born in New York City, NY after her parents moved back to her father's hometown after Arthur (Arty) served at Camp Maxey near Paris, TX. He met Mary while living at the camp. Living in NY was short lived as Mary wanted her child, and herself, in Texas. Arty made a deal with Mary that they would live in Texas if she would allow him to rear April in his family's Catholic faith. Mary agreed and replied, “Oh good, Jesus and Texas.” April attended Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church School in elementary school here in Paris. She later joined the Paris High School class that would become the graduating class of 1966. She loved being on the class reunion committee after moving back to Paris after living away all of her married life.

Her father and mother both preceded her in death, her father in 1970 and her mother in 1998. She is also preceded in death by an infant brother, buried in nearby McDonald Cemetery.

April married George Sidney Freeman in Dallas County, TX and George preceded her in death in Dallas. She remarried on January 1, 2001, or as she called it 1-1-1, to Guy Joel Coward, a native of Lamar County, who served his country well for 28 years then retired and lived on the Texas coast until returning to Paris. Joel Coward survives her.

April was manager of a Hallmark Store in Garland, Texas for some years. She was a salesperson at heart. She worked 38 years at Brooks Brother's Men Store in Dallas Galleria until she retired. She always had a side business such as antique stores, shops or a booth and when eBay and Amazon came along, she joined right in. She loved decorating and restoring old furniture and did both very well. She was a member of the Paris Downtown Association.

Per April's wish, she will be cremated and her remains will be interred at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery alongside her first husband, her parents, and some additional family members.

In lieu of usual remembrances, donations may be made to the Humane Society of Lamar County.
