Obituary for Velma Strickland

Velma Strickland
Velma Lilly Conder Strickland, 98, of Paris, passed away peacefully on Friday, July 7, 2017 at Paris Regional Medical Center. Roden-Pryor Funeral Directors will conduct funeral services 10:00 A.M. Tuesday July 11th, 2017 in the Gene Roden Memorial Chapel with Brothers Randall Scott and Steve Gunter officiating. Interment will follow at Meadowbrook Memorial Gardens, however, formal graveside services will not be observed.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home one hour prior to services.

Velma was born on November 8, 1918 in Paris to Effie Vanmeter and William A. Conder, who preceded her in death. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church where she enjoyed teaching Sunday School and worshipping the Lord. She devoted herself to the care of others as a registered nurse at St. Joseph Hospital for more than forty years. Her free time was spent with the things she loved, her grandkids, great-grandkids, bowling and watching sports and game shows on TV. She even had an appearance on Bowling for Dollars. If she had ever gone on Jeopardy, she would have surely won.

She married Walter P. Strickland in 1934, and they were together until his death in 1973. They had four children, three of whom she is now reunited with in Heaven, John Strickland and his wife, Nita, June and Leonard Fox and Jerry Strickland. She had two brothers, Earl and Billy and one sister, Lucille, as well as two great-granddaughters, Ravon and Brittany, that have also gone on before her.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rita and Jack Strickland of Paris. Jack has been a caring son, checking on her daily, along with the Brentwood Terrace Nursing Home staff for the last several years of her life. She is also survived by her grandchildren Jeff, Denise, Debra, Mark, Todd, Marcie, Tiffnay, Christy and Gayle, and at least twelve great-grandchildren and at least seven great-great grandchildren.

Honorary pallbearers are Mark, Todd and Jeff Strickland, Joshua Cooper, Jeremy Brown and Jeremy Massey.
