Obituary for Jerry R. Towers

Jerry R. Towers
Jerry Ruth Towers, age 86, of Hurst passed away Friday, June 23, 2017 in Fort Worth. Services will be 10 AM Saturday, July 8, 2017 at Roden Pryor Funeral Directors with Pastor Walt Waiser officiating, 425 S. Church St., Paris, TX with interment at Mt. Tabor Cemetery on FM 1499 north of Paris.

Jerry was born May 14, 1931 in Paris, TX as the only child of George Earl Towers and Jonnie Anderson Towers. She graduated from Paris High School in 1948. She started her medical career at Wilson Jones Nursing School in 1949 in Sherman. From there Jerry attended City County Hospital School of Nursing in Fort Worth, graduating in 1951. A couple of years later, Jerry decided to pursue a degree in Nurse Anesthesia (CRNA) from Baylor University Hospital in 1954. Since she loved to travel, she was able to find employment in places like Oklahoma, California and Georgia. After her father died in 1957, Jerry decided to move to Lubbock where she experienced the devastating tornado that hit that city. Bedord and Hurst became her home for the remainder of her nursing career at Harris Hospital and Medical Plaza in Fort Worth. Jerry cared for her ailing mother, Jonnie, whom she adored, for many years.

During her travels to visit her cousin, Virginia Johnson, in Albuquerque, NM, Jerry fell in love with the scenery and Indian art, especially pottery from the San Ildefonso Tribe. She would visit the home of renowned Carmelita Dunlap to acquire more knowledge of the art and purchase unique pieces.

Jerry's happiest times were spent at home with her devoted friend, Margaret Gallegos, enjoying her art, yard, and beloved dogs. Jerry was fortunate to have neighbors, the Herndons, who oversaw her care in her final years.

She will be dearly missed by her cousin, Vicki Johnson (Mike Raugh), her neighbors for 40 years, Wayne and Mary Anne Herndon, Amy Herndon-Reid (Greg), Amanda Herndon Denning (Aaron), Caroline Denning, Carson Denning, and many friends and family.
