Obituary for A.W. Shelton Jr.

A.W.  Shelton Jr.
A.W. Shelton, 79, of Petty, passed from this life Monday, June 5th, 2017 at Paris Regional Medical Center following a brief illness. Roden-Pryor Funeral Directors will conduct memorial services 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 8, 2017, in the Gene Roden Memorial Chapel at the funeral home with The Reverend Craig Reed officiating, assisted by The Reverend Betty Clement, Deacon. Private interment will follow at Hickory Grove Cemetery.

The family will greet friends at the funeral home immediately following the memorial services.

Asburn Wilson Shelton, Jr. was born May 17, 1938, to Asburn W. Shelton, Sr. and Margaret Oleta Palmer in Cooper, Texas. He graduated from Cooper High School in 1956. He attended East Texas State University on a golf scholarship, eventually graduating in 1961. That same year, he married the love of his life, Margaret Ann Graves. He then went on to serve his country honorably as a 2nd Lt. Battery Commander. After the service, he went to work with his father-in-law farming five-thousand acres from 1962 to 2003.

In 2002 A.W. received his real estate license. He served as a committee chairman for the Lamar County ASCS for eleven years. He served as president of Shorthorn Cattle Association of Texas, as well as several other farm organizations in Lamar County. A.W. served as a board member of Paris Golf and Country Club, as a member of Episcopal Vestry Board, as well as twenty years on the Texas Veteran’s Land Board.

A.W. is survived by his wife, Margaret; a son, Greg Shelton (Scott Sumsion), of Dallas, Texas; a son, Kevin Shelton (Cathy), of Lindale, Texas; a grandson, Mark William Shelton; as well as numerous family and friends who will miss him dearly.
