VAUGHN THOMAS RODEN, JR., 69, of Paris, passed away at his residence Saturday February 18th, 2017. Roden-Pryor Funeral Directors will hold funeral services 10:00 A.M. Thursday February 23, 2017 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church with Father Anthony Stoeppel officiating. Interment will follow at Restland Cemetery in Roxton, Texas.
The family will greet friends 5:00 – 6:00 P.M. Wednesday February 22, 2017 at Our Lady of Victory Catholic Church. Observance of the Rosary will follow the visitation at 6:00 P.M.
Tom Roden was the son of Lucille Cordelia Fletcher and Vaughn Thomas Roden, Sr. He was born May 25, 1947 and raised in San Antonio, TX. He graduated from Robert E. Lee High School and attended San Antonio Junior college until he was drafted in 1969. He served in the US Air Force for 4 years as a telecommunication technician during the Vietnam War. Two of these years he was stationed in Japan where his group was called to set up and maintain SSIR and Top Secret communication systems anywhere in the Far East. In Tokyo, he met his wife, Ruth Bonnell Roden. He later attended the University of Houston on the GI Bill studying mechanical engineering. For 35 years, he worked in instrumentation and computer processing at the Cedar Bayou Petrochemical plant in Baytown, TX which has been owned by the following companies: Gulf Oil, Chevron Oil, and Chevron Phillips Chemical.
Every summer of his childhood, Tom would leave San Antonio for 3 months and stay at his grandparent’s farm near Roxton, TX. After retirement, he moved to Lamar County because he purchased and loved this family farm so much and wanted to farm the family land. Tom was happiest driving his tractor. He was an avid hunter and marksman, in addition to having the aptitude to fix anything put in front of him. He was a loving family member to everyone, even if they weren’t blood. He was an amazingly devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, brother-in-law, uncle, nephew, and cousin.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth Bonnell Roden of 44 years, his children, Tracy Ann Roden, Shannon Roden Ternan, and Vaughn Thomas Roden, III (Tommy), and his grandchildren – Isabelle Roden, Nicholas Ternan, Kason Cates, and Stevie Boone. He has one brother, Michael Gene Roden and his wife Sandy of Crosby, TX, and their three children, Kristin, Sean and Austin Roden.
