Obituary for William Freeland "Bill" Swafford

William “Bill” Swafford went to his eternal home in heaven on February 1, 2017, surrounded by his loving family.

Roden-Pryor Funeral Directors will hold graveside rites 11:00 A.M. Monday February 6, 2017 at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Oklahoma City, OK with Rev. Gary Bishop officiating.

Bill was born in Maysville, Oklahoma, on February 8th, 1921, the son of David Welcome Swafford and Electra Freeland. He married Marjorie Fischer in 1946. They were married for 67 years before her death in 2013.

Bill served the U.S. Army in the Pacific theatre in World War II, where he exemplified being part of the “greatest generation,” earning the Bronze Star. He worked at Star Manufacturing Company in Oklahoma City for 45 years before retiring. He loved bowling, golfing, and woodworking, especially making things for his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Bill loved God, and was a very active member of Capitol Hill Baptist Church for many years, where he taught 9-year-old boys and later girls and boys. In 2004, he moved to Paris, Texas, where he was a member of East Paris Baptist Church.

He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Winstead (Don) of Winchester, Virginia, and Barbara Dunlap (Ray), of Paris, Texas; three grandchildren, Joel Winstead, Margaret Sullivan (Scott), Laura Johnson (Bryant); and four great grandchildren, Savannah and Jackson Sullivan, Carter and Luke Johnson; a brother-in-law, Dwayne Fischer; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife, his parents; his siblings Jesse, Mark, Earl, Earnest, Lloyd and Alva Swafford, Ethel Tackett, Edith Hill, and Agnes Nichols, and several nephews and nieces.
