Obituary for Douglas Alden "Doug" Loughmiller

Douglas Alden "Doug" Loughmiller
DOUG LOUGHMILLER, “W5BL”, 60, of McKinney, took his final flight and crossed the horizon into life eternal on Friday July 22, 2016. Funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday July 27, 2016 in the chapel of Starrett Funeral Home, with Rev. Rob Spencer officiating. Interment rites will follow the service in the committal chapel of Evergreen Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Douglas Alden Loughmiller was born on March 28, 1956 in New Albany, Indiana, to Robert and Renie Lindley Loughmiller. He was a graduate of Southport High School, Indianapolis, Indiana. Doug started his young adult career as a professional baker, and tendered his craft for over ten years, eventually reaching a supervisor level position at Merico, later Earth Grains and Sara Lee. From there he worked in the Satellite Communications Department at the University of Surrey, in England, as a payload supervisor. This provided him with many travel opportunities throughout Europe as well as Russia, China and South America. He then pursued a successful career in the electronic component industry, working for Arrow Electronics, Future Electronics/FAI and finally RAM Electronic Sales, where he specialized in highly technical consultative selling.

To those who knew him, Doug’s life spoke for itself as one of compassion, kindness and generosity. He was very enthusiastic about amateur radio as well as aviation, having obtained a pilot’s license several years ago. He was also interested in motorsports, fishing, and scuba diving. Doug was often asked to share his knowledge of ham radio and satellite operations, which he was comfortable doing in either large crowd settings or as a private tutor and mentor to smaller groups. In 2007 he received the honor of “Instructor of the Year” award from the American Radio Relay League (ARRL), of which he was a Life Member. He was also a member and former President of AMSAT Corp., a volunteer educational organization with an interest in building, launching, and operating satellites carrying ham radio. He was co-founder of the “ARBONET - Amateur Radio Balloons Over North East Texas” organization and member of several ham radio clubs throughout North Texas. Passionate as he was about his craft, Doug was equally compassionate for those less fortunate than himself, whether human, or animal, and gave of both his time and resources to improve lives and make opportunities more abundant. Doug is now a Silent Key.

Doug married Danielle Catash (Danny) on May 4, 2001 in Paris, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and grandparents.

Survivors include his wife Danielle Loughmiller; two brothers, Deane Loughmiller, Dale Loughmiller and wife Melanie; and a niece Lindley Loughmiller, all of Paris; an aunt, Phyllis Freeman and husband Harold, of French Lick, Indiana; an uncle, John Loughmiller and wife Donna, of Covington, Kentucky; numerous cousins; and his loving canine companions, LeRoy and Boudreaux.

Named to serve as pallbearers are Kenny Daus, Ed Ellis, Richard Lenoir, Joel Mashburn, Michael Willett, and Allen Williams.

If desired, memorial contributions may be made in Doug’s memory to the Paris Public Library, 326 South Main Street, Paris, Texas 75460; the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22478, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 73123, www.cancer.org , or to the charity of one’s choice.
