Marcia Putnam (Walker)
Marcia Walker Putnam departed this life on April 6, 2016 at her home in Paris, Texas. Born on August 11, 1954, she was the third of four generations of health providers who have cared for this community since 1901, including her son, her father, Dr. Marcellus Walker, Jr., and her grandfather, Dr. Marcellus Walker, Sr.
Funeral services are set for Saturday, April 9, 2016 at 11 am at Central Presbyterian Church, 309 South Church Street, with the Rev. David Darrow officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Cemetery under the care of Starrett Funeral Home.
Marcia was a pillar of the Lamar County medical community. Described as a mentor, a teacher and a role model for all, she began her education in Paris, graduating from Paris High School in 1972. She earned a BSN degree from Texas Christian University and a MSN from the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio. From 1978 to 1984, she taught nursing at the Baptist Memorial Hospital System School of Nursing in San Antonio. Returning to Paris in 1984, she taught nursing at Paris Junior College from 1984-1993. She served in various leadership roles at the St. Joseph’s Hospital and Health System from 1993-1997 when she became Director of Nurses at CHRISTUS St. Joseph’s in 1997. After hospital consolidation she was named Director of Health Occupations at Paris Junior College in 2001 where she has served with competence and vision until her recent illnesses. Under her leadership, the competitive health occupations school grew from LVN and RN programs to include EMT/Paramedic, Radiology Technology, Surgical Technology and Medical Records Coding. A selfless and quiet leader her entire life, Marcia served on the Session of Central Presbyterian Church, the National Children’s Study for the Lamar County Advisory Board and the Cypress Basin Hospice Advisory Board.
She married Jim Putnam on July 16, 1982. He preceded her in death, as did her father, Dr. M. A. Walker, and mother, Kathryn Walker. She is also preceded by her sister, Cindi.
Marcia is survived by her son, Dr. Walker Putnam and his wife, Alix, and her grandsons, Harper James Putnam and John Walker Putnam of Paris. She also leaves her sister, Diane Rudy, and husband Richard Rudy, her nephew, Marc Rudy, and nieces, Kerri and Kelli Rudy.
Pallbearers will be the sons of her closest friends: Casey Munn, Brad Munn, Will Biard, Trase Christian, Kevin Ashmore and Ryan Whitaker. Honorary pallbearers are Plug Clem, Tom Bass, Gaylon Maddox, Holland Harper and Jordan Harper.
